A collection of brief revision notes

Welcome to the Histocompatibility & Immunogenetics site. I hope you find it useful.

Histocompatibility & Immunogenetics is a compound phrase.

Histocompatibility derives from the Greek word Histos which means tissue and the word compatibility which has Latin roots (Compati – meaning to sympathise) and in this context describes relatedness or degree of match.

Immunogenetics is made from the words immunity and genetics and is concerned with the genetics of the immune system. Immunity derives from the Latin word immunis which means ”exempt” and ”genetics” derives from the Greek word genesis which means origin.

The work of a Histocompatibility & Immunogenetics department centres around the provisions of laboratory services and clinical advice related to solid organ and stem cell transplantation, provision of transfusion support to immunologically refractory platelet patients and the investigation of the genetics of Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) related disease associations.
